Windows 7 32 and 64 bit "Computer" do not show any drives or shortcuts
My current issue is when opening a "Computer" window (the My Computer equivalent) in Windows 7, intermittently clients will have a screen that shows no shortcuts (such as C:, the optical drive, any network mapped drives). The left column that displays the favorites and the libraries all have the spinning mouse circle to indicate that they are loading. The green bar will go across the top of the screen indefinitely and does not disappear at any point. I would like to prevent this from happening. Some factors: Often times restarting the machine, or on occasion just closing the explorer window and reopening will make the issue go away temporarily. When in a working state if you open and close it a few times to test it will eventually cause the drives to be lost and the endless green progress bar. If you click on the "Explorer" folder on the task bar the C: drive, the optical drive, and any network location can be opened and will browse just as they would if correctly accessed from the My Computer shortcuts. We are using the OEM image, ( that came with the machine). All machines are updated as far as possible This occurs on only one domain connected computer. It's a Windows 7 64bit professional HP Pro This is the only machine we are having this issue with.

1. Are there any traces in Event logs? 2. Not sure why you use "computer" instead of Win+E 3. It is useful to give some data on the history. It this new installation? Does this appeared after update, application install, or change of configuration? 4. Is this the case of one user profile or all profiles? 5. Have you run sfc /scannow from elevated Run as Administrator? If not, do it. 6. If nothing helps and it point to operating system and not corrupted profile, I would recommend repair or in-place upgrade and if this does not help, then start from new image/installation (It may be faster then remedy.) The only event I see in the log is a "DistributedCOM Event 10016". As for the "computer" it's the end user that uses the computer link. But it permforms the same either way. It's a new installation right out of the box HP Pro running Win 7 Pro x64 (the companies choosing, not mine). It's very random when it rears it's ugly head, I've yet to find a pattern at this point. It appears to only be the case with the end users profile. I've not witnessed it when i'm logged in either with an admin account or my "generic" user account. I will try the sfc route. and proceed from there. Thanks, Brian

Hi, As the issue occurred currently, we may try to perform System Restore to an earlier date before the issue appeared. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/system-restore In addition, we may re-create the user profile for a test.Kim Zhou TechNet Community Support

Since it only occurs when that specific user is logged in, have you tried having that user log in to a similar computer to see if it may be an issue with his/her domain account? Have you tried disconnecting all mapped drives for that user and re-mapping them one by one? Also, does this use have a USB stick/drive attached?

At this point I believe the issue has been fixed. By using the following commands: netsh int tcp set heuristics disabled netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disable. Since both of these have been set to disable they problem seems to have been corrected at this point. Just a bit more background info for Ole Drews Jensen: It didn't happen on the end users old PC, and didn't appear to happen when she logged in anywhere else. I had tried disconnecting the drive mappings and re establishing them. And finally no USB devices beyond the keyboard and mouse. Thanks for everyone's help. It's been greatly appreciated!!

This issue has happened from the time of deployment, but just on this pc and just with this users profile on this pc. She is able to log in to another and not have the issue.

It sounds like her profile on that specific computer has an issue. You should delete and recreate her profile and see if that takes care of the issue. Ole

Has to be a profile issue, we've swapped her out to another new identical PC. It worked fine for a day and a half, then today she reports the same issue. I'll dig further into the possibility of a corrupt profile and see if it can be corrected from there.

You should also check if she has installed something that could cause this issue. Look for the newest stuff in the Program Files folder.
